Christopher Walken; Michael Cimino; 298844 Votes; Michael, Nick, and Steven are three buddies from the steel mill town of Clairton, Penn.They work together, hang out in a local bar and enjoying weekends deer hunting Ina a larger group with three other friends. But their placid life is soon to be changed after the three buddies enlist in the airborne infantry to go to Vietnam. So they all celebrate a goodbye at Steven"s wedding and they leave for Vietnam. They are captured by the enemy and forced to play games of Russian Roulette to amuse their guards. They escape and Mike returns home to find Nick has stayed in Vietnam and Steven is handicapped after losing his legs and the use of one arm after the escape. Always heard this film either terrible meh or great when I watched it I was kinda shocked, thought it has problems but it"s far from Meh or terrible. Great video as always. glad to see no dislikes yet. 2020 and Walken is still hot here... Love this memories. The casting in this movie is unparalleled.

Working class lads no care in the world. Innocent fun drinking and playing. Probably never seen the world outside their small-town. You will never be prepared for what war really is. This is literally my favourite scene in any movie, ever. De Niro is unbelievable. Thanks so much for your excellent breakdown. Keep it up. This has been my favorite movie for the past 15 plus years. This movie shows me just how important friendship is in life & how important a human beings life is. Its just a really great movie.
Um, if I"m mistaken, I think it"s called The Deer Hunter. It says so right there. 1978 coming home. You go with these bums to the Vietnam. I cry watching John Wayne last appearance. He is so brave. A true man. Loved Cheswick. Is it me or does michael cimino kinda look like jon lovitz. Wow. John Wayne conversing with the Hollywood stars and friends for the last time. It feels like an end to a movie. Freedom. The Deer Hunter was the very first of the Viet Nam movies and that might be the reason it works in riddles as opposed to openly.
First we have a working class Russian community living in Pennsylvania as our protagonists. Russia (at the time belonging to the Soviet Union) represents communism, which the erratic Viet Nam war was officially all about (or was it. br> Then we have parallels and analogies of ceremonies. Shooting to kill a deer is O.K. because it"s a sport but shooting at the enemy is wrong because it"s cruel. And there is the "Russian. roulette, which of course is just another metaphor.
This film is filled with riddles which we have to decyphered with successive viewings.
That still doesn"t make it a masterpiece but it"s a very intense and brutal movie.
I am not 100% unbiased since I first saw it in the theater with my father on my 18th birthday. Yet I consider it one of the all time greats.
The russian orthodox church choir in the excellent sound track accompanying the coming home of Christopher Walken in a coffin is wonderful. John Williams" not Steve Spielberg"s favorite composer of the same name) guitar playing during the "longing for tenderness and understanding" scene between Maryl Streep and Robert DeNiro is outstanding.
This is true art: it"s meaning is open, it just asks questions and puts the viewer in a certain mood. It"s up to us to find out what it really means.
One thing is for sure: it"s about friendship. Check the scene where Robert DeNiro calls his war buddy John Savage.
Again: the whole movie is a metaphor and a riddle. It is up to us to find it out. Even the last scene when all sing "God bless America, My home, sweet home." has many meanings.

One of the greatest films I"ve ever seen. not the most enjoyable, but definitely in the top 5-10 easily in punching me right in the gut. But this trailer is absolute trash. Kina off topic but does anyone know the name of the piece played on the piano in the bar after they go hunting i think? Or was it just composed for the film. Hard to watch. You can see Duke"s struggling, but with classic Duke Wayne style, he mustered through it and did it with dignity. Hell, not just anybody could take on the role of Oscar presenter with terminal cancer. Having finally being able to see this film recently, I have to say it did live up to my expectations and is certainly a very good film. Although I don"t think its as good as Apocalypse Now or other war films I"ve seen, it is still an interesting study of the effects of war people.
The performances are all great, particularly DeNiro and Walken during the Vietnam scenes where the terrifying and brilliantly filmed Russian Roulette sequence takes place. Although the film is slow moving during the first hour it is never boring and always keeps you interested.
An interesting and occasionally harrowing film. 9/10.
Kinda wish theyd have thanked John Cazale cause he died right after filming.
One of the most beautiful movies ever made
X hunter. Play this in your car while driving at night. Who came here from inkslasher. Great movie, intense ending. The greatest scene in movie history. The Moose Hunter is a great movie. FFC called the technological industrial powerhouse we have with Apple and samsung now over 40 years ago. Can"t take my eyes off you. The Russian Roulette game was meant to symbolize the war in Vietnam. The three outcomes are death, physical injury, and mental scarring. If you get the 1/6 chance of the bullet, you die. If you get the bullet, but tilt the gun away, you get a lasting physical injury. If you get the 5/6 chance of no bullet, the fact that you could have killed yourself leaves psychological trauma. The director is trying to show that no one can escape the war in Vietnam unscathed. Yet, it is considered patriotic to go and serve your country, no matter the cost to the soldiers. It is the older generation (politicians) who declares war, but the younger generation who fights.
